Crickets are orthopteran insects that are closely related to grasshoppers. Commonly known for their chirping sounds, these insects have long antennae and hind legs adapted for jumping. In the diverse climates of Perth, Western Australia, crickets can often be found in gardens, homes, and businesses.

While they serve as a valuable food source for various wildlife and play a role in breaking down plant material, their presence can be concerning when they infest homes and businesses. Their nocturnal songs, while pleasant for some, can be a disturbance for others, especially when it interrupts sleep or daily activities.

Crickets found in Perth often vary in size and colour. They generally have a flattened body, two pairs of wings, and large back legs designed for hopping. House crickets, field crickets, and mole crickets are among the common species in the region.

Their lifecycle includes egg, nymph, and adult stages. Young crickets (nymphs) resemble adults but lack wings. Their chirping, known as ‘stridulation’, is created when males rub their wings together to attract females.

While crickets are not harmful to humans in terms of health risks, they can be a nuisance when they invade properties in large numbers. Their continuous chirping can disrupt daily routines and rest. Additionally, crickets have been known to feed on fabrics, paper, food, and other items, which can lead to property damage. Sticky traps can be effective for capturing crickets inside the house. Diatomaceous earth, when sprinkled around areas where crickets are found, can also deter them. Reducing outdoor lighting or switching to yellow “bug lights” can lessen the attraction for crickets. However, these methods might only provide short-term relief and might not be effective against large infestations.
